Vitamin D is necessary for utilization of calcium and phosphorus and in many ways acts as a hormone.78-80 The two most important forms of vitamin D are cholecalciferol (D3), which is derived from our own cholesterol and ergocalciferol (D2), a plant analogue derived from the diet. The cholecalciferol supplied by the Life Extension Buyers Club is synthetic, but its form is identical to that which is derived from cholesterol and synthesized by sunlight on the skin. Cholecalciferol Vitamin D is essential for bone growth and maintenance of bone density. A dietary deficiency of vitamin D inhibits the production of the protein that binds calcium in the intestines, so that calcium cannot be absorbed, even if there is adequate intake. Deficiencies of vitamin D are often found in the elderly and in women who have low intake of milk and receive inadequate exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D is potent in minute quantities; one microgram of cholecalciferol has 40 IU of vitamin D activity.

My doctor recently tested me for Vit D levels, and since taking this supplement, I'm at the high range of what is considered normal for vitamin D. Good to know this works, since I know I wasn't getting very much vitamin D from just being outdoors this winter (because I wasn't out very much). -- Its a vitamin, it works

If you live in the upper midwest or northwest where clouds and gray skies rule for 3-5 months a year, doctors advise patients 50 years of age or older to add at least 1,000 to 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 to their diets. The Life Extension brand is a great value, and I prefer the capsules over the soft gels. So this works perfectly for me. Always consult your physician before taking any drug or supplement because some of these may interact negatively with any precriptions and/or supplements you are currently taking. Please note that this is Vitamin D-3 not the usual Vitamin D (which is slightly different). Most of the research on Vitamin D has been on Vitamin D-3, not the mixed ones. I have found this to be a good product, small capsule, easy to swallow. Decent price. -- Vitamin D-3

I purchased two of these. One for my daughter in college and one for me. It made both of us sick. It made her extremely jittery and nauseous and it gave me one heck of a stomach ache. I bought this because of all the wonderful reviews here in Amazon. So consider this your reality check people. -- Buy something else
